Griegos

Griegos allows one to observe the mountains beside the watershed of the Tagus and the Guadalaviar. The navazo, cultivation and the spring retain traces of how this terrain was inhabited.

Terrain that had to be drained

The regional survey places Griegos beside a flat-bottomed valley floor (navazo), between the Muela de San Juan and the Tremedal massif. Difficulty in discharging water required digging drainage ditches to cultivate crops. The landscape thus retains a tangible relationship between soil, water, and labour.

The fountain as a village gathering point

Local documentation records the custom of decorating the fountain with foliage on the eve of San Juan, known as el chopo de la fuente. This custom connects everyday water use with the memory of festivals and rituals.

Beside a watershed

Griegos is included as a village in the territory of the headwaters of Albarracín. That reading includes the divide with the Guadalaviar, whose waters flow towards the Turia. It helps in understanding the source of the Tagus without attributing all mountain watercourses to it.
