The Alto Tajo month by month

The Alto Tajo in November: peak autumn foliage

November brings peak foliage colour to the Alto Tajo: poplars, maples, and gall oaks achieve their richest yellows, oranges, and deep reds during the first half of the month. Mushrooms continue until hard frost sets in, cranes fly south in noisy flocks, and long, cold nights offer pristine dark skies.

Landscape

The defining moment for river gorges: glowing yellow poplars set against sheer rock and dark pine. Low autumn sunlight deepens the apparent relief of the canyons.

Mushrooms

If autumn has been wet and severe frosts hold off, saffron milk caps and other late fungi continue fruiting. Once hard freezes arrive, fruiting ceases at higher elevations.

Birds

Common cranes fly overhead in large skeins heading south toward wintering grounds in Extremadura. Wintering passerines from northern Europe arrive in local fields and groves.

Practical tips

Night falls early: plan hikes to finish well within daylight. Some local accommodations and rural services reduce opening hours outside of weekends.
