The Alto Tajo month by month
The Alto Tajo in October: deer rut, wild mushrooms and autumn colours
October is the crowning autumn month in the Alto Tajo: the red deer rut concludes, fallow deer begin their groaning calls, pine forests brim with wild mushrooms following autumn rains, and riparian poplars and gall oak woodlands turn vivid gold and amber. Mornings are crisp and afternoons mild.

Mushrooms
After rain, peak fruiting arrives: saffron milk caps (Lactarius deliciosus) in pine stands, boletes, chanterelles, and countless other species. Check local picking regulations: many public forests are managed reserves requiring permits.
Wildlife
The red deer rut subsides through the month, while in woodlands inhabited by fallow deer, their guttural rutting calls begin. An excellent time to observe deer feeding late in the day.
Landscape
Black poplars, willows, field maples, and Portuguese oaks transform in colour. The contrast with dark pine canopies and red sandstone cliffs becomes dramatic from mid-October.
Practical tips
Never consume a wild mushroom without expert confirmation. Pack warm layers for chilly mornings and respect regulated harvesting zones and private fences.
The night sky in october
Long, crisp nights with the Andromeda Galaxy riding high overhead. Toward the end of the month, the Orionids meteor shower peaks.
