The Alto Tajo in May: wild orchids, peonies and peak greenery

Flora

Wild peonies blossom in pine clearings, alongside dozens of wild orchid species across limestone meadows and forest margins. The high parameras burst into blossom with thyme and gorse.

Wildlife

Peak breeding season: vulture chicks can already be spotted in nests, and the cliff faces bustle with activity. A great month to spot roe deer at dawn along meadow margins.

Water

Rivers maintain generous flows and travertine tufa barriers actively build new mineral terraces.

Practical tips

The finest month for long hikes and Geopark trails. Carry sun protection: at this altitude solar radiation is intense even when ambient temperatures are mild.

The night sky in may

The Milky Way emerges before midnight from the east, with the galactic core in Sagittarius clearly visible in the small hours. Early in the month, look for the Eta Aquariids.
