The Alto Tajo in June: short nights, the Milky Way and cool rivers

June marks the onset of summer in the Alto Tajo, but without the intense heat of the central plateau: nights remain brisk, rivers still hold clean water, and vegetation is fully lush. It is an exceptional month for gorge hikes, butterfly watching, and observing the first full summer Milky Way.

Nature

The month of insects: butterflies in valley-bottom meadows, damselflies and dragonflies along riverbanks, and evening crickets. The scent of pine resin warms the forest air.

Wildlife

Fledgling raptors prepare for their first flights. Toward dusk, red deer and roe deer can often be seen feeding out in meadow clearings.

Water

The Tagus and its tributaries begin lowering their discharge, yet retain clear, refreshingly cold waters.

Practical tips

High season begins at Salto de Poveda and Laguna de Taravilla. Check canondeltajo.es for dates and stretches requiring parking reservations: regulations can take effect in June and arriving early does not waive the reservation requirement.

The night sky in june

The shortest nights of the year, yet the Milky Way is visible from horizon to horizon, with the galactic center in Sagittarius and Scorpius hanging low over the southern skyline. Best on moonless nights.
