The Alto Tajo in September: the red deer rut begins

September is when the red deer rut (la berrea) begins in the Alto Tajo: from mid-month, deep bellows from competing stags reverberate along forested valleys at dawn and dusk. Temperatures ease, summer crowds disperse, raptors migrate southward, and early autumn fungi emerge after rains.

The deer rut

Mature stags gather harems of hinds and challenge rivals with resonant roars audible across several kilometers. Activity intensifies during the second half of the month, concentrated at dawn and dusk.

Birds

Autumn migration is underway: Egyptian vultures, bee-eaters, and other summer residents depart toward Africa, while the skies see passage of migrating raptors.

Mushrooms

With early autumn rains, the first Boletus and saffron milk caps (níscalos) can fruit, though the main flush arrives in October.

Practical tips

To listen to the deer rut, arrive before twilight, keep quiet, and stay on established roads or viewpoints: never approach animals or trespass on private property.

The night sky in september

Pleasant evening temperatures with the Milky Way high overhead at nightfall, and steadily lengthening nights. The autumn equinox falls around 22–23 September.
