Castles and fortresses of the Alto Tajo

The Alto Tajo was a contested borderland for centuries, first between al-Andalus and Christian kingdoms, and later between Castile and Aragon. This frontier legacy left imposing castles, watchtowers, and fortresses, from the majestic castle of Molina de Aragón to Zafra perched upon a sandstone crag.

During the Middle Ages, the Señorío de Molina was a semi-independent border lordship between Castile and Aragon, prompting the construction of numerous fortifications: grand castles, fortified manor houses (casas fuertes), and river watchtowers (atalayas).

Before you visit

Several castle ruins sit on private land or steep cliffs. Check whether visits are permitted and never climb unstable walls: it is dangerous and accelerates their deterioration.
