Castle of Zafra: the rock fortress of the Sierra de Caldereros

The castle of Zafra is a 12th-century rock fortress in Campillo de Dueñas, in the Sierra de Caldereros, with its keep perched atop a tall sandstone crag. Mentioned in the first Fuero de Molina, it is assumed to have an Arab origin. Partially restored, it retains crenellated walls with towers, a cistern, and a tower with a Gothic entrance and spiral staircase.

Perched upon the sandstone crag

Few castles blend so completely with their geological setting. The keep rises directly from the narrow crest of a sandstone cliff, surrounded by the Sierra de Caldereros, a dramatic landscape of red sandstone escarpments.

Surviving features

The fortress is partially restored. Visible elements include stretches of crenellated curtain wall with corner towers, the cistern in the courtyard, and the keep, which retains a Gothic pointed doorway and a spiral staircase leading up to the roof terrace.

History

The site appears in the first Fuero de Molina, granted by Manrique de Lara, leading historians to deduce an earlier Arab origin. It is reached along Georuta 10 within the municipality of Campillo de Dueñas. Only exterior visits are permitted; the interior is not open to the public, as noted by Turismo de Castilla-La Mancha. The surrounding terrain is not developed as an urban tourist site.

Planning the visit

Plan an exterior visit to observe the fortress architecture and its relationship to the natural crag. Do not organize a visit expecting access to the cistern or the interior staircase.

Before visiting

The approach terrain is uneven and exposed to weather. Respect the property boundaries and refrain from climbing onto the rock face or historical masonry.

Combining visits

Combine your excursion with Sierra de Caldereros. Check its entry to plan your day.
