Historic quarter of Molina de Aragón: palaces, Jewish quarter, and Moorish quarter

The historic quarter of Molina de Aragón preserves a medieval layout of cobbled streets and red sandstone, with its Jewish and Moorish quarters beside the Gallo River and a series of blazoned palaces: the 18th-century Casa del Obispo Díaz de la Guerra, the palaces of the Arias and Montesoro families, and the Molina palace, known as La Subalterna, featuring a large voussoir arch and the coats of arms of Molina, Castile, and León.

A town of red stone

At the foot of the castle, Molina de Aragón preserves an old town of cobbled streets and red sandstone buildings that forms a declared historic ensemble. It is easily explored on foot starting from the Puente Viejo.

The palaces

The coats of arms and inscriptions on the facades recall the noble families that enriched the town:

  • The Casa del Obispo or Bishops’ mansion, dating from the 18th century, built by Juan Díaz de la Guerra, the “builder bishop”, as the financial seat of the Sigüenza diocese.
  • The palacio de los Arias and the palacio de los Montesoro.
  • The palacio de los Molina, known as La Subalterna, featuring a large semicircular voussoir arch and the heraldic shields of Molina, Castile, and León.

Jewish and Moorish quarters

Beside the river, a walkway leads to the historic quarters of the judería (Jewish quarter) and the morería (Moorish quarter), which retain their medieval urban layouts. The Jewish quarter extended from Calle de Arriba down to the lower slopes of the castle, where archaeological excavations are currently underway at Prao de los Judíos.

Churches

Santa Clara, San Pedro, and San Gil.
