A parish church with a turbulent history
In the heart of Molina de Aragón, the church of Santa María la Mayor de San Gil, locally called simply San Gil, is one of the historic medieval parishes of the town. Its foundations date to the 12th or 13th century, though surviving documentary records date from the late 15th century.
Two historical catastrophes
In 1811, during the Peninsular War, Napoleonic troops sacked the building. In 1915, an accidental fire completely gutted the interior, destroying numerous sacred artworks. It underwent comprehensive reconstruction and was officially reopened on 29 September 1924, meaning much of its current interior finishes date from the early 20th century.
