Understanding the Alto Tajo at a glance

From here you see the landscape clearly: you stand atop a high plateau, and the river has cut downward, revealing the limestone cliffs of the canyon. Opposite rises Muela del Conde and, behind it, Mirador del Machorrillo. Below, you can trace the Tagus valley, the Cabrillas gorge, and the hollow of Laguna de Taravilla. The only visible scar is the kaolin quarries of Poveda.

Vultures in flight

In the late afternoon, griffon vultures catch thermal updrafts to gain height, passing so close you can hear the wind rushing through their flight feathers.

When to go

At sunset. It is a quiet place that leaves an impression. It is easily reached from Taravilla, or along the Ruta BTT 2, Los Miradores del Tajo trail.

Planning the visit

If visiting for the sunset light, plan your return accordingly. The walk back and driving time should be factored into your schedule.

Before you go

Check the approach track and carry a torch if there is any chance of returning after dark. Stay back from the cliff edges in strong winds, and remember that raptor sightings depend on weather conditions.
