Fossils in the old village forge
In Maranchón, the historic municipal building of La Fragua (The Forge) has been transformed into the El Mirón Paleontological Museum. It is situated in a region of rich geological heritage, within the Molina-Alto Tajo UNESCO Global Geopark.
Fifty years of collection
The permanent exhibition contains approximately 1,300 catalogued specimens, predominantly fossils collected across Maranchón and other parts of Guadalajara province, complemented by comparative specimens from other regions of Spain and abroad. The collection was assembled over more than fifty years by two local residents, Gerardo Lacasa and Begoña Oter, who generously donated it to the municipality.
The visit
A main gallery organized chronologically by geological eras allows visitors to trace, fossil by fossil, the deep geological history of the Alto Tajo, from ancient Paleozoic seas to Jurassic coral waters. An excellent complement to the fossil ray traces of Esplegares.
