Council Pen of Ciruelos del Pinar: communal justice among neighbours
The Council Pen of Ciruelos del Pinar is a small communal enclosure where stray livestock found grazing in someone else's vegetable garden or crop field were impounded. Animals were not released until their owner appeared before the village arbiter (hombre bueno) to assess damages. Preserved by the council as a memory of communal justice.

A pen for stray livestock
In the rural communities of the Señorío, mules, donkeys, and horses provided agricultural traction, and they occasionally broke free. If an animal entered another neighbour’s vegetable garden or sown crop field, in Ciruelos del Pinar it was impounded in the Corral del Concejo, a small stone communal pen.
The village arbiter
The animal remained impounded until its owner appeared before the village hombre bueno (“good man”), a respected elder chosen as mediator. He assessed the damages and established the compensation payment. Without formal courts or paperwork, minor neighbourhood disputes were settled quickly and communal peace was maintained.
Today
The local council preserves this grass-covered stone pen as a tangible reminder of historic systems of community justice. It illustrates the same rural customs described in a year in a highland village.
