Thousands of pools
Across the north and east of the Señorío, above 1,000 metres, the high plains are dotted with seasonal pools and ponds that fill with rain and dry out in summer. Nearly 3,170 temporary pools have been counted: a rare habitat protected across Europe, home to important colonies of aquatic ferns.
Birds
On these plains of scrub and thyme lives the elusive Dupont’s lark, with one of the healthiest populations in the region, alongside the thekla lark and other steppe species. When the pools hold water, cranes and waterfowl arrive on migration and for the winter.
Where to go
The reserve covers roughly 6,160 hectares shared among several municipalities. Two great starting points are the lagoons of Tortuera, with their marked trail, and the lagoons of La Yunta. Further north, the plateau continues into the Parameras de Maranchón.
