Los Ojos de la Cárquima: the hidden Tagus waterfall
Los Ojos de la Cárquima is a seasonal waterfall on the left bank of the Tagus, beyond the Hundido de Armallones. Rainwater filtered through limestone emerges from two caves and pours into the river. Only seen in full splendour after heavy rains or snowmelt, reached on foot from Ocentejo to the La Inesperada saltworks.

Two eyes in the rock
Rainwater filters through limestone on the hillside, travels underground, and pours out through two cave openings, the “eyes”, cascading down toward the Tagus. It is a clear example of how karst works: the mountain stores water and releases it when full.
A waterfall to be earned
It is not easy to see. It appears only in times of heavy rain or snowmelt, and at its best only in unusually wet springs. It also requires a walk: it is reached along the path from Ocentejo to the La Inesperada saltworks, past the Hundido de Armallones.
If your visit coincides with rain, it is one of those rewards the Alto Tajo reserves for early risers willing to hike.
